Itinerary
Day One – Arrival Day
Transfer to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport to the hotel in the center of Porto Check-in and free time to rest.
Day Two – Porto
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, you’ll set off on a guided walking tour of Porto’s historic centre, where centuries of rich culture and architecture come to life. Stroll through the atmospheric streets of the Ribeira district, admire panoramic views from the iconic Luís I Bridge, and pause outside the stunning Livraria Lello-one of the world’s most beautiful bookshops (entry ticket not included). Along the way, take a well-earned break at a traditional Portuguese pastry shop to savour a freshly baked Pastel de Nata, a true local delicacy. The afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace, with time for lunch at a café of your choosing or perhaps a bit of souvenir shopping. For those interested, the day concludes with an optional visit to a renowned Port wine cellar, including a guided tour and tasting session where you can discover the deep, complex flavours of Portugal’s most famous export.
Day Three – Braga
Board the train from Porto to Braga and journey through northern Portugal’s scenic landscapes before arriving in one of the country’s oldest and most charming cities. On arrival, enjoy a guided walking tour through Braga’s historic centre, where elegant baroque architecture, Roman ruins and vibrant squares tell the story of a city shaped by over 2,000 years of history. From the city centre, travel by bus to the iconic Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site set high on a hillside. Here, you’ll take a ride on the historic water-powered funicular, offering sweeping views and a memorable ascent to the sanctuary’s ornate stairways and peaceful grounds. After your visit, return by bus to the city centre and enjoy free time for lunch and further exploration at your own pace. Later, relax on the train journey back to Porto, reflecting on a day filled with culture, heritage and striking scenery.
Day Four – Guimarães
After breakfast at the hotel, take the train from Porto to the beautifully preserved medieval city of Guimarães, often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal. On arrival, set off on a guided walking tour through the cobbled streets of the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the imposing Guimarães Castle, where Portugal’s first king was born, and explore the grand Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, with its impressive collection of artefacts and stunning architecture. Continue to the charming Largo da Oliveira, a picturesque square lined with gothic and medieval buildings that offer a glimpse into the city’s rich past. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure- perhaps find a cosy café for lunch or browse the local shops and galleries. Later, return to Porto by train, bringing a relaxed close to a day steeped in history and heritage.
Day Five – Douro Valley
Take the train from Porto to Pinhão and enjoy one of the most scenic rail journeys in Portugal, winding through the heart of the Douro Valley with sweeping views of terraced vineyards and the glistening river below. On arrival in Pinhão, set off on a rewarding walk along the Quinta das Carvalhas trail, beginning at the stunning viewpoint of the same name. This 6km route offers panoramic vistas across the valley, reaching a maximum altitude of 409 metres and showcasing the natural beauty of the region. After your walk, enjoy lunch at your leisure in one of Pinhão’s traditional eateries or riverside cafés. In the afternoon, relax on a one-hour cruise aboard a traditional rabelo boat, once used to transport Port wine along the Douro River. Drift past vineyard-covered hillsides and soak in the tranquil surroundings before taking the train back to Porto, rounding off a memorable day in the Douro Valley.
Day Six – Aveiro
Discover why Aveiro is often called the “Venice of Portugal” on a guided walking tour that follows the city’s charming canals, lined with colourful moliceiro boats and elegant Art Nouveau buildings. As you stroll through the historic streets, your guide will point out the unique architectural details and share stories of Aveiro’s rich maritime heritage. Along the way, pause at a traditional pastry shop to sample the city’s most famous sweet treat, Ovos Moles-delicate rice paper shells filled with creamy egg yolk and sugar, a centuries-old local delicacy. After the tour, enjoy lunch at your leisure and take time to explore more of this picturesque city at your own pace. In the afternoon, relax on the train journey back to Porto, bringing your visit to this enchanting waterside town to a gentle close.
